지스트 이색 외국인 교수, 국제학술지 책임편집위원 선임

10년이상 지스트 재직 고분자물질과 나노과학 연구선도

이학박사와 의학박사 취득 융합학문에 강점 가져

 

지스트(GIST, 광주과학기술원)를 제2의 고향으로 삼아 지스트 신소재공학과 전임교수로 10년 이상 재직해온 외국인 교수가 해명 저명 학술지의 책임편집위원에 선임돼 눈길을 끌고 있다. 화제의 주인공은 신소재공학과 게클러 교수(60세, Kurt E. Geckeler, 국적 독일). 

지스트(원장 선우중호)에 따르면 게클러 교수는 최근 ‘존 와일리 앤 선즈(John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)’ 출판사가 발간하는 SCI 학술지인 ‘폴리머 인터내셔널(Polymer International)’의 편집위원장(Executive Editor)에 선임됐다.  

게클러 교수는 2001년부터 이 학술지의 부편집위원장 (Associate Editor)으로 활동해 오다, 고분자 물질 및 나노과학 분야의 탁월한 연구성과를 인정받아 책임편집위원에 선임됐다. 1969년 창간된 이 학술지는 고분자 과학과 기술에 대한 모든 분야를 아우르고 있어 세계적인 명성을 갖고 있다. 최근에는 생체고분자의 응용과 조직공학, 나노기술, 고분자 물리, 고분자 복합체, 초분자 구조체 분야 등 융합기술 분야를 다루고 있다.

독일 튜빙겐 대학에서 교수로 재직하던 게클러 교수는 1998년 지스트 신소재공학과 외국인 전임교수로 부임했다. 이후 외국인 교원으론 드물게 국내에서 10년 이상 고분자 물질과 나노과학 분야에서 선도적인 연구와 후진양성 활동을 펼쳐 이 분야 국제적인 전문가로서 명성을 다져왔다. 지금까지 총 203편의 SCI급 국제논문과 17편의 전공서적 저술, 40편의 국내특허와 55편의 국제특허를 등록하여 보유하고 있다. 이 가운데는 네이처 응용화학지 등과 같이 세계적인 학술지에 실린 연구논문들도 많다. 또 미국 독일 등 세계 여러 나라와의 활발한 공동연구를 이끌어 왔으며, 대한민국의 과학발전에 기여할 만한 국제학회를 다수 주최 해 왔다. 이러한 연구실적과 공로를 바탕으로 지난 2006년 지스트 영년직 교수로 임용되면서 같은 해 과학의날 유공자 선정에서 대한민국 대통령표창을 받기도 했다.

게클러 교수는 독일 튜빙겐 대학에서 유기화학 박사 및 의학박사 2개의 박사학위를 취득한 특이한 이력을 갖고 있다. 학위이후엔 튜빙겐 대학 및 칠레 콘셉션 대학 교수로 재직했으며 미국 하버드대, 프랑스 몽펠리에대 에서 연구원으로 재직한 바 있다. 이기간 중 하버드 대학 우수 방문 과학자상과 프랑스 방문 우수과학자상을 수상하기도 했다. 또한 ‘어드밴스드 머테리얼즈(Advanced Materials)’, ‘매크로몰리큘스(Macromolecules)", ‘폴리머 인터내셔널(Polymer International)’ 등 총 19개 저널 편집위원으로 활동하는 등 국제적인 연구활동을 하고 있다. <홍보협력팀, 2008.10.23>

One foreign professor, who has been hold his professorship position more than 10 years in GIST and recently nominated as the executive editor in a prominent international journal, became a topic of conversation. The focused person is Prof. K. E. Geckeler in the department of Materials Science & Engineering. (Age: 60, Kurt E. Geckeler, Nationality: Germany)

GIST mentioned that Professor is recently nominated as “Executive Editor” in SCI journal ‘Polymer International’ which is belonging to Wiley & Sons Ltd publisher.

Prof. K. E. Geckeler has been worked as “Association Editor” in the same journal and recently nominated as “Executive editor” because of his recent outstanding research accomplishments in Polymeric materials and Nanoscientific field. The journal created in 1969 contains all areas about ‘polymer science & technology’ so that it is prominent in the world. Recently it includes diverse fusion technology such as ‘application of biopolymer’, ‘tissue engineering’, ‘nanotechnology’, ‘polymer physics’, ‘polymer composite’, and ‘supramolecular structure’.

Prof. K. E. Geckeler, who had been worked in Tuebingen university previously and has been worked foreign professor since 1988. From that time, extraordinarily as foreign professor, he has been showed the outstanding leadership on the research fields of polymeric materials and nanoscience and actively educated many young scientists more than 10 years in South Korea so that he has been accumulated his reputation as the international expertise in the fields. Till now, he has totally “203 SCI publication” and “17 book writings”, “40 registered domestic patents”, and “55 registered international patents”.  Among these, he published many articles in ‘nature’ and ‘angewante chem." level’s journals. And he has been leaded active collaboration researches with world-wide countries such as US and German and he has been initialized and organized IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on Macro- and Supramolecular Architectures and Materials. Because of these research accomplishments and meritorious service, he was nominated as lasting professorship in GIST and simultaneously he was awarded highly prestigious KOREAN PRESIDENT AWARD.
