GIST Korea Culture Technology Institute has developed a multidimensional imaging technology and platform to experience immersive performances

□ The Korea Culture Technology Institute (Director Mun Sang Kim) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) plans to invest 2.7 billion won by 2020 jointly with video and video equipment maker WAY & M Systems to develop a multidimensional imaging technology and platform to experience immersive performances.

* According to Article 17-5 of the Framework Act on the Promotion of Cultural Industries, the Korea Culture Technology Institute was established on April 1, 2013, to carry out research and development on technology based on cultural interchange and convergence of diverse academic fields such as design, art, and humanities.

∘ The Korea Culture Technology Institute has been carrying out the Ministry of Education's policy-specific tasks since 2014 and is currently in the second year of "UI / UX ** technology development for AR glass operation" and is also researching a new project about "Research and Development of Multidimensional Imaging Technology and Platform to Experience Immersive Performances."

* UI: Abbreviation for user interface that contains commands or techniques for operating a digital device.

** UX: The overall user experience, such as perception, reaction, and behavior, that a user feels and thinks about when using a system, product, or service either directly or indirectly.

□ Up until now, performing arts have been costly to create by a small number of artists with special qualifications and experiences. However, in recent years, the performing arts have been transformed into popular arts with more large-scale and multi-content performances increasing in popularity.

∘ The GIST Korea Culture Technology Institute applies cutting-edge performance production technology, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors, and virtual matching technology to create technology that emphasizes more creative and emotional performances while lowering production costs for manpower and equipment.

∘ In particular, high-tech wire cams, mobile arm cams, PTZ cams *, industrial mechanical implementation using a remote controlled lighting system, and copper wire and environmental simulations are used to minimize the number of rehearsals.

* PTZ Cam: Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera

□ Director Mun Sang Kim said, "GIST's multidimensional imaging technology and platform technology is designed to expand the reach of performance photography and provide quality video. This will contribute to the revitalization of the domestic performance market through standardization of technology in the field of performing arts and streamlining production of performance videos. In addition, we will make efforts to create new cultural industries and expand opportunities for video production through the fusion of advanced performance shooting technology."

□ GIST has recently signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea Creative Content Agency, Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Gyeongsangnam-do Kimhae, and the Lotte World Hotel.
