Learning Zone

Baeummadang (Learning Zone)

Baeummadang is a knowledge-sharing volunteer program designed to make society better by providing hope and encouragement to underprivileged youths and contributing to the local community.

In this program, GIST students visit children's centers in Gwangju to provide counseling services about future career choices and offer after-school tutoring to underprivileged youths.

With GIST students (teachers) and a total of 2,700 students from low-income families participating in this program, Baeummadang has been well received by local children's centers and youths for seven consecutive years now.

Operational period
  • Feb. 2010 (Batch 1) to Nov. 2016 (Batch 13 at work)

    The activity period has changed from 6 months to 1 year beginning with Batch 13

  • Teachers visit the centers once a week for 1 or 2 hours at a time.

    Feb. 2016 marked the 6th anniversary of the GIST Learning Plaza program

  • Elementary, middle, and high school students from children’s centers in Gwangju

  • About 50 teachers by batch / About 200 leader students (per year)
  • Number of participants (accumulative): 2,700
  • A total of 16 children’s centers in Gwangju have participated in the program thus far
