Professor Hyo Sung Ahn"s research team programs autonomous drone
to fly in formation during Korea"s Ground Forces Military Festival
Professor Hyo Sung Ahn of the School of Mechanical Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) led his research team to program autonomous drones to fly in formation during Korea"s Ground Forces Military Festival, which was held between October 2 and 6, 2016.
The autonomous drones displayed complex aerial performances based on simple algorithms that allowed the drones to determine their own flight path based on their distance and relation to other drones. The drones flew for about 8 minutes along a runway that was crowded on both sides by thousands of spectators.

The Army presented a plaque to Professor Hyo Sung Ahn in gratitude for his contributions to the military festival.

Professor Hyo Sung Ahn said, "The purpose of our drone research is to study navigation technologies related to autonomous control systems of various types of devices and platforms."
