GIST is ranked 2nd by QS World University
Rankings for the second year in a row

1

On September 6, 2016, the British global university rating agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the annual 2016/17 QS World University Rankings, which, for the second year in a row, ranked the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) second in world in the category of "citations per faculty."

Citations per faculty is a measurement that evaluates the quality and scope of a university’s research. Its effect is important as the more frequently a researcher’s work is cited by peers, the more impact his or her work has in a given field.

After being ranked 15th in 2008, GIST has continually risen in the rankings. GIST was recognized for its world class research ability after being ranked in the top 10: 7th in 2012, 6th in 2013, and 4th in 2014.

GIST has a post-retirement program, the ‘GIST Senior Fellow,’ that provides opportunities for faculty members who have shown excellence in research achievements to participate in laboratory management and research even after retiring.

Through the ‘GIST Senior Fellow’ program, GIST strives not only to motivate researchers at the institute but also to treat them with respect and provide them with incentives and recognition for their research impact. By recognizing students as research partners for professors, by guaranteeing active research participation for undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students, and by providing experiences for students to enhance their research skills, these are the key factors that allow GIST to maintain its world-class research capabilities.

GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "GIST"s exceptional results in the QS World University Rankings is the result of our professors and students who have worked diligently achieve and maintain our research performance. And I will continue to do more to ensure the future success of GIST researchers so that we can contribute more to Korea"s economic and industrial development."
