Nobel Grubbs Catalyst Polymerization Research Center
has opened at GIST to develop new functional catalysts for polymers

On May 20, 2016, the opening ceremony of the Nobel Grubbs Catalyst Polymerization Research Center was held at the Renewable Energy Research Building. Professor Robert Howard Grubbs of Caltech won the 2005 Nobel Prize in chemistry, and he was appointed as the head of the research center.

In the 1980s, Professor Grubbs successfully created double and triple bindings of carbon-metal for the first time in the world. He also developed olefin metathesis techniques that earned him the 2005 Nobel Prize.

GIST and Caltech established a research group for professors to collaborate on a one-to-one basis, and has been exchanging scientific and technological research materials. Professor Grubbs and Professor Jae-Suk Lee of the School of Materials Science and Engineering have been jointly researching novel methods to synthesize polymers since 2012.

They plan to continue with their research to synthesis new functional materials with their collaborative development of ion polymerization and Caltech’s metathesis method.

Vice-Director Jae Suk Lee said, “We hope to contribute to the strengthening of national basic scientific research competitiveness and gain original technology by creating synergies from studying formation of materials at the molecular level.”
