GIST Professor Dong-Yu Kim receives a prestigious science and technology award from the Korean government in celebration of Science Day for his work on low-cost, high-efficiency organic solar cells

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) Professor Dong-Yu Kim of the School of Materials Science and Engineering receives a prestigious science and technology award from the Korean government in celebration of Science Day on April 21, 2016, for his work on low-cost, high-efficiency organic solar cells.

In addition, Professor Min-Gon Kim of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Youngsoo Jun of the School of Life Sciences, and Senior Technician Miyoung Yoo were also honored with an award for outstanding research performance and the promotion of science and technology.

Professor Dong-Yu Kim came to GIST in 1999 and has published over 250 prominent and national and international journals and has given over 300 presentations related to his excellent research performance. He has also served as the dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering and the Heeger Center for Advanced Materials. He also served as an editor for the journal Advanced Optical Materials.

Professor Min-Gon Kim was recognized for developing advanced biosensor technology that can rapidly detect numerous biomarkers with a small amount of blood. In 2012, he founded a biotech company to commercialize his research.

Professor Youngsoo Jun came to GIST in 2009 and has published papers in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Journal of Cell Biology. He established and directs the GIST Silver Health Bio Research Center, which plays a key role in promoting important research for the elderly in Korea.

Senior technician Miyoung Yoo has worked at GIST for 19 years and was recognized for her contributions to GIST, which included helping with the creation and establishment of the library and providing educational research support to students and professors, and for strengthening human resources at GIST.

Every year on Science Day, awards are given by the Korean government to promote the development of science and technology by honoring those who have made significant contributions. The 49th Annual Science day was held on April 21, 2016, at KIST.
