GIST College achieves an admission’s ratio
of 13.71% for the incoming class of 2016

□ According to the QS World University Rankings for 2015, GIST is currently number two in the world for ‘Citations per Faculty’ after steadily rising in that category since 2008 when GIST was ranked number fifteen. Following upon GIST"s continued global recognition for science and technology education and research, GIST College has also grown increasingly competitive with a student admission"s ratio of only 13.71% for the incoming undergraduate class of 2016.
From September 9 to September 15, GIST College received admissions applications from 2,400 prospective students, which is a record high for the school. With only 175 limited openings through the alternative enrollment admissions process, there was greater academic competitiveness to enter GIST College as only 13.71% of the qualifying students were accepted.
When compared to the other four national science and technology schools, GIST College had the lowest admissions ratio, making it—statistically speaking—the most competitive school to enter. In this regard, GIST College outperformed the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH).
□ With a total of only 175 seats available for new students through the alternative admissions process (as opposed to the standard college entrance exam enrollment process), 105 of the available seats were reserved for general admissions. There were 1,199 general admissions applicants for these 105 seats, which resulted in an admissions ratio of only 11.42%. Another 50 seats were reserved for students with recommendations from their high school principals, and there were 1,026 applicants, which in an admissions ratio of 20.52%.
The remaining 20 seats were reserved to address social inequality and to provide equal educational opportunities for deserving students with limited environmental or economic means, such as those who live in rural areas, receive welfare assistance, or qualify as veterans. There were 175 applicants for these 20 seats, which resulted in an admissions ratio of 8.75%.
□ GIST College will conduct applicant interviews from October 27 to 30, 2015, successful applicants will be announced on November 20, 2015. GIST College plans to select students who have a propensity for GIST’s 3C1P philosophy of creativity, cooperation, communication, and problem-solving by testing the applicant"s competency with difficult mathematical and scientific problems.
GIST College will admit a total of 200 new students in 2016. 175 students will be selected through the nonscheduled admissions process, and 25 students will be selected through the regularly scheduled college entrance exam enrollment process by December.
□ GIST is the nation’s only liberal arts science and technology college. To benchmark with the world’s best science and technology university, Caltech, both schools have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop stronger relationships with each other through various exchange programs and collaborations.
The unique features of GIST College includes: a superb research and training environment that focuses on the interests of individual students, a 10 to 1 student-faculty ratio that provides an enriching educational environment for students, a strong emphasis on having students take wide-ranging core courses in their freshmen and sophomore years, and a requirement for students to live in dormitories so as to create a residential campus environment where learning never stops.
□ Every student admitted to GIST receives a government scholarship that covers tuition costs, so students only have to pay for personal expenses while attending GIST College. Students can also participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) through Caltech and can participate in study abroad program (SAP) with various schools around the world.
