GIST"s laser research capacity stretches throughout Asia

1

The Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) at GIST is the nation’s top research institute for lasers and optics. The institute will host the "Summer School on Lasers and Laser Applications 2015" (SSOLLA 2015) from July 6 to 11. 2015. They invited laser researchers from Asia to attend this event.

SSOLLA 2015 is an on-going regional project that began in 2008 by APRI to promote cooperation with Asian countries. Some thirty researchers and students will attend the event from eight countries: Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cambodia, and Philippines.

This year’s event is different from the previous years because APRI is inviting GIST and other science and technology school students to attend. About 30 students will participate with the foreign researchers and discuss research developments regarding lasers.

Lectures will include a basic course on optics, design and application of special optical fibers, microfabrication using lasers, bio-optical imaging, femtosecond laser spectroscopy, integrated optics, and terahertz photonics (a terahertz is equal to 1 trillion times per second).

Director Yong-tak Lee of APRI said, "APRI, a leading optics research center in Korea, has developed the world’s first 1.5 petawatt (1PW = 1015 watts) laser and has made outstanding research achievements regarding basic science and industrial applications. Moreover, the institute"s collaboration with laser optics researcher from throughout Asia is expected to contribute to APRI"s continued global leadership of optical technology."
