A team of three GIST College students won the first prize in a national collegiate contest for water environment policy/technology ideas hosted by the Ministry of Environment. The prize came with a minister’s award certificate and 2 million won in prize money.

The three students (Jeong Hee-won, a junior in Physics Concentration, and Ki Tae-yoon and Park Yeon-joon, freshmen in Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences) belong to the student environmental club Onsaemiro (meaning “nature as it is” in old Korean). They proposed an innovative method for LID (low impact development) facility control using weather radar information to win the prize in the competition held over a period of five months starting from June 2014.

Mr. Jeong Hee-won said, “The contest format was such that the participating teams are asked to propose policies and technologies on 16 given subject areas related to water environment. It was a great opportunity for us to learn about a variety of aspects and viewpoints from fellow students representing 50 universities all over the nation.”

Professor Kim Joon-Ha of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, who has been mentoring the Onsaemiro students, said, “As increasingly more students are getting interested in environmental issues, we are planning on campus activity programs employing technological solutions, such as monitoring water quality in the ponds and water fountains or air quality in dorm rooms. We also need to establish a policy that allows patent registrations for creative ideas proposed by students.”
