□ On the Dec. 18th GIST(Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President    Young Joon Kim) announced that GIST and Caltech(California Institute of Technology), a world-renowned science and technology university which has produced 32 Nobel laureates, agreed to carry out joint research in new material, bio, and medical fields starting from 2013 and selected eight researchers from the two institutes for the project.

The “GIST-Caltech Collaboration Research” is a science and technology research exchange project between a Korean and American university, where two professors from each university form a one-to-one research team, perform a joint research project decided based on prior agreement, and then present the result. It is the first time to carry out one-to-one joint research project between Caltech, a prestigious American science and technology university and Korean university.

GIST and Caltech have already been developing exchanges and cooperation in education and research areas, including Caltech professors’ lecture for GIST, establishment of basic science lab and curriculum consulting, and participation in a support system for summer research of undergraduate students(SURF).
