hosts 2016 International Forum for Climate Change in Cambodia
The GIST International Environmental Research Center under Director Joon Ha Kim hosted the 2016 International Forum for Climate Change in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The main purpose of this forum over the past 16 years was to provide an opportunity for aid agencies and beneficiary countries to communicate with the UN.
At the time of the UN General Assembly held in 2000, the Millennium Declaration was adopted by world leaders: "To halve, by the year 2015, the proportion of the world’s people whose income is less than one dollar a day and the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and, by the same date, to halve the proportion of people who are unable to reach or to afford safe drinking water."
Unfortunately, this goal will not be met even after 2016.
In particular, the Paris Agreement in November 2015 promised to have a global agreement on water issues by 2020 and final settlement as well as an actively binding implementation of the new climate change regime.
Since then, the United States has decided to provide $ 100 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) under the United Nations by 2030.
The forum included senior officials and scientists from six developing countries in Southeast Asia who are directly affected by climate change, including Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and the Philippines.
In addition, environmental experts from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Korea University, and the APEC Climate Center participated in the forum.
In this forum, ▲ present and future of Southeast Asian ecology and natural resources due to climate change ▲ collaboration between developed and developing countries to achieve sustainable development ▲ national climate change policy and strategy ▲ adaptation technology and development of climate change Presentations and discussions were held.
Participants specifically discussed national environmental issues caused by climate change, such as water shortages, loss of biodiversity, and coastal waters.
In order to effectively cope with climate change, it is necessary to deepen the understanding of the donor country with regards to the real issues of the beneficiary country. Participants agreed that it is necessary to have close cooperation and continuous dialogue between developing countries (i.e. beneficiary countries) and developed countries.
Dr. Vann Monyneath, head of the Cambodian National Council, said, "This forum is a place for policy makers and experts from different countries to gain a deeper understanding of climate change."
The forum was organized by Director Joon Ha Kim who said, "GIST"s International Environmental Research Center will accumulate information on climate change and environmental issues in developing countries in Southeast Asia, so that the region can actively respond to climate change and seek solutions. We will contribute to policy formulation related to environmental technology, development and research." He added, "Information derived from this workshop will be used as an important resource for deciding how to use the Green Climate Fund."
