The Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI, Director: Prof. Yong-Tak Lee) of GIST is holding its annual Summer School on Lasers and Laser Applications (SSOLLA) from July 14 (Mon) through July 19 (Sat). SSOLLA 2014 is being attended by 30 researchers invited from 10 countries in Asia.

SSOLLA has been hosted every year since 2008 by APRI, a leading research institute on lasers and optics, with a goal of promoting cooperation among countries in Asia. Participating researchers this year are from Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, China and Pakistan.

SSOLLA attendees are taking classes in a variety of topics including the basics of optical science, the design and applications of special optical fibers, laser micro-machining, bio optical imaging, femtosecond laser spectroscopy, optical bio sensing, and terahertz photonics. GIST faculty members and APRI research scientists are participating as lecturers.

“APRI is producing outstanding research results in both basic science and industrial applications, including the development of 1.5 petawatt super-powerful laser for the first time in the world,” said Director Yong-Tak Lee of APRI. “SSOLLA is expected to help APRI take a leading role in optical science and technology in Asia through exchanges among researchers in the region,” he added.
