Celebrating <Science Day> GIST opens science experience event and donates books for children

- APRI holds ‘Science World for Primary Students’ on April 22
- Donating 800 science books for 10 primary schools in the High-tech Industrial Complex as part of efforts to help the public be familiar with science

□ In celebration of the 47th Science Day, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President   Young Joon Kim) held science program April 22 (Tuesday) to offer a chance for primary students in neighboring communities to have direct experience with laser, the specialized research subject of GIST.  

o Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI, Director, Yong-Tak Lee), a research institute specialized at photonic technology and laser held the event of ‘Science World for Primary Students’ in the High-tech Industrial Complex from 1:00-5:00 PM April 22, inviting primary students in the industrial complex to offer opportunities of various experiences related to laser.

□ The event has been held since 2008 with researchers at APRI participating as instructors to help students better understand and experience the nature of light with various activities including drawing with laser, balloon popping game, laser alarm experience and learning the principle of high power laser. 

o For the event, 70 participants ( 60 students and 10 teachers) visited the site from 5 primary students in the High-tech Industrial Complex.

□ GIST also donated 800 science books with the budget of KRW 12 million to 10 primary schools including Wolbong Primary School in the industrial complex in celebration of <Science Day>. Lee Byeong Ha, the Dean of the Office of International & Public Affairs visited Wolbong Primary School (Principal Kim Bong-jae) April 18 to hold book donation ceremony and deliver the books to students. □ President Young Joon Kim said “Celebrating Science Day, I expect the scientific experience of in event will be an opportunity for the public to feel more familiar with science and primary students interested in science to dream of being future scientists.”
