Professor Lee Byeong-ha at GIST awarded with Haerim Photonics Prize

- Awarded by Optical Society of Korea on February 20th For remarkable achievement in research of fiber optic sensor

- The Prize granted every year with the fund established with donation by Professor Baek Un-chul, the first professor at GIST

□ Professor Lee Byeong-ha (Dean of the Office of International & Public Affairs) at School of Information and Communications at GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President ž Young Joon Kim) is awarded with ‘Haerim Photonics Prize’ by Optical Society of Korea (President, Whangbo Chang-gwon), the prize for excellent researcher in the field of optical science.

○ ‘Haerim Photonics Prize’ is running with the fund donated for the great cause of advancement of Optical Society of Korea by the now deceased professor Baek Un-chul (1934~2011), the well-known global leader in the field of optic fiber manufacturing research and the first professor at GIST and named after the nom de plume of professor Baek “Haerim.”

○ Optical Society of Korea awards the prize to the researchers among its members who made great contribution to academic development in the field by publishing constructive research papers in the field of photonics in recent 5 years and posting the papers on academic journal (Journal of Optical Society of Korea) or other journals registered on SCI (Science Citation Index).

□ This year, “Haerim Photonics Prize” went to Professor Lee Byeong-ha who published 55 papers on SCI registered journals over the past 5 years and made 429 citation in total during the period.

○ Especially the paper published in Optics Letters, a prestigious international academic publication in the field of photonics is about optic fiber sensor that enhances the measurement precision up to 10 times and has gained keen attention of the community, being cited more than 80 times by leading global journals.

□ Optical Society of Korea awarded the prize and trophy to Professor Lee and other award winners with superb research achievements in the 2014 Winter Seminar held in Daejeon Convention Center February 20 (Thursday), 2014.
