7.1:1 competition rate in rolling admission to GIST College

- 992 applicants to 140 spots in general rolling admission…most of them from science/ prodigy high schools

- 52 applicants to 10 spots in special admission for fair opportunity recruitment … successful candidates to be announced on Nov. 15

GIST(Gwangju Institute of Science Technology, President   Young Joon Kim) ranked 6th in the area of research capability (citations per faculty) by 2013 QS World University Rankings and pursues an engineering education model for select few so as to cultivate world-class talents in science technology. In its rolling admission procedures to recruit students for 2014 semesters, competition rate was as high as 7.1 : 1.

The number of applicants from science high schools (including prodigy schools) was 582 (55.7%), followed by 428 applicants from general high schools (41%) and 34 applicants from other schools (3.3%).

Among the applicants, those who pass paper screening will be put through interviews (3 days: Oct. 23~25) and successful candidates will be announced on November 15.

GIST had previously operated only master’s and doctoral programs but later GIST College, a residential college, was established for the purpose of nurturing world-class engineers based on a shared vision with Caltech (California Institute of Technology, the US) which is one of the most prestigious engineering schools. Since 2010, GIST College has recruited freshmen through the admission officer system only.

GIST College proclaims itself to be a “small but strong college” and pursues a completely differentiated engineering education program for select few, drawing a great deal of attention. For instance, the ratio between student and professor is 10:1 and no tuition is charged. The amount of benefits provided to each student is the highest in Korea. All sophomores are sponsored by the school to attend summer/winter sessions at UC Berkeley in the US.
