GIST Ranked 5th in Evaluation of IP Competitiveness of Universities

  

 

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President  Young Joon Kim) ranked 5th in ‘2013 University IP Competitiveness Evaluation” conducted by Electronic Times. The evaluation was performed around the end of September.

Especially, in ‘IP Global Competitiveness’ GIST was a dominant No. 1, beating out all competitors and in IP Capability, GIST retained the top spot, ranking 5th among universities across the nation.

In the IP evaluation in 57 knowledge indicators in 4 areas of IP culture, global competitiveness, IP competence and industrial contribution, the first of its kind introduced and performed by Electronic Times, GIST ranked 5th in total ranking following Hanyang University, Korea University, Postech and Sungkyunkwan University.

Other universities on the list include Yonsei University (6th), KAIST (7th), Sogang University (8th), Seoul National University (9th), Kyunghee University (10th) and Ewha Woman’s University (11th).

 Among the 4 evaluation areas, GIST showed superb performance over other universities in ’IP global competitiveness’ to evaluate overseas activities and contents of those activities based on international patent application/registration, joint research with foreign research institutes and standard patent management and especially received perfect score in No. of patents registered overseas and joint research with foreign partners.
 GIST registered 7.04 (University average 0.39) cases of international patents application and 3.28 cases of patents registration (University average 0.14) per faculty in average. Especially the percentage of patent family (multiple application taken in many foreign nations) in more than 2 foreign nations amounted to 29.2% (University average 9.71%). Among others the percentage of patent family in U.S., Japan and EU is especially high at 3.89% (University average 0/39%).

For the key drivers for the superb performance of GIST in IP global competitiveness, Electronic Times pointed out GIST’s internal policy to make international application for more than 50% of domestic patents and active joint research with world prestigious institutions including education and research partnership with Caltech, one of the best universities in engineering and technology in the world.
