"We are waiting for new students with spirit of challenge!"

- GIST Graduate School starts to receive applications for the 2nd round of admission for 2014 spring semester

 

 

Kim Nam Yun, a student at the School of Mechatronics was on his way back from the class of <Advanced Auto Control>. He joined GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President   Young Joon Kim) last March to become the first student on Graduate Program, winning the GIST Presidential Fellowship. The president scholarship is granted to the top performing student on the integrated program and full financial support for admission fee and KRW 3 million scholarship is provided in each semester for 3 years. The student also has the honor to receive the letter of degree with the record of being awarded with the president scholarship stated.

GIST Graduate School will hold a session to provide information on admission and Open Lab for students who will apply for the 2nd round of admission for 2014 spring semester. This time around 143 spots for M.S. and 103 spots for Ph.D. or M.S./Ph.D. Integrated Program (Integrated Program) are open for students who apply for 8 admission units of School of Information and Communications, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Mechatronics, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Department of Physics and Photon Science, Department of Chemistry and Department of Medical System Engineering. The application submission period is from October 17 (Thursday) to October 29 (Tuesday).

The admission information session will be held on October 18 (Friday) at GIST campus to offer an opportunity to get direct information on the status of GIST, scholarship and key things to consider in making the application. Also Kim Namyun, the student winning GIST President Scholarship in Spring semester 2013 will join to share his first-hand experience of being a student of GIST and give advice on graduate school admission. After the session, participants will be given the opportunity to tour around all laboratories at GIST Graduate School and get to know how the life at the lab is through Open Lab.

   Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the foundation this year, GIST has been making efforts to strengthen its presence as research-oriented school with the strategy of “Select and Focus.” As a result,  it ranked 6th in Citations per Faculty in the 2013 QS World University Rankings announced on September 10th 2013, climbing one spot higher from 2012. After its first debut at the 15th position in the world in 2008 on the list, it climbed its way from the 14th in 2009, the 10th in 2010, the 12th in 2011 and the 7th in 2012, being recognized for its world class research capabilities. Among Asian universities, GIST maintained the top position for 6 years in a row. In 2013 QS Asia University Rankings announced on June this year, GIST ranked 1st in Citations per Faculty among Asian universities.

   Students who enter GIST Graduate School will be exempted from the payment of tuition and faculty fee for the full amount and be awarded with a certain amount of scholarship, meal support and research support. They are also provided with a double occupancy dormitory to help them stay focused on studying on the program. Male students who have not finished mandatory military service can complete their duty by entering and completing Ph.D., or integrated program being recognized as Expert Research Personnels.

As the English lecture for all classes that has been implemented since the opening of the school now fully takes roots in campus culture, 10% of students at GIST Graduate School came from foreign nations. Student/professor ratio of GIST is 8.2:1, standing on a par with the world most prestigious universities such as California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (7.4:1) and MIT (10.9:1).
