Advanced Photonics Research Institute holds

‘photonics summer school’ for Asian scientists

  5-day education program on optic technology and laser application from July 8

  high-level lectures and research in Gwangju, the mecca of the photonics industry

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President   Young Joon Kim) will hold the Summer School on Lasers and Laser Applications (SSOLLA 2013) where young Asian scientists will participate in training and research on optical science and photonics technology for five days from July 8 to 12.

The Summer School will be organized by Advanced Photonics Research Institute of GIST (Director Lee, In Won) and attended by 13 scientists from Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, India and Indonesia. The participants will take courses taught by APRI researchers, who developed ultra high efficient laser (1.5 PW) for the first time in the world, and undertake research.

This education program consists of a variety of subjects from basic research on photonics to laser application as follows;

   -High Sensitive Gas Detection by Using Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
   -Principle and Application of Organic Electronics
   -Femtosecond Laser Pulse Characteristics and Transient Absorption Spectroscopy
   -Relativistic Laser-plasma Interaction: Theoretical Introduction

Established in 2001, APRI is a research institute specialized in optical technology and laser. With 70 researchers earnestly engaged in research, APRI plays a leading role in photonics R&D of Gwangju, which is the mecca of the photonics industry in Korea. Since 2008, APRI has pushed ahead with the ‘Asian Laser Center’ project aimed at promoting laser research in other Asian countries where optic technology research falls behind Korea and is making aggressive efforts to promote personnel exchange and joint international research among Asian countries.

This year marks the 4th anniversary of SSOLLA which has taken place every summer since 2010.
