GIST - Institute for Basic Science – Caltech

Had a Conversation about ‘Talk about the Future of Science in Korea’

Nobel Prize Winners in the category of science were selected since 8th October, 2012 starting from the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It is the so-called ‘Week of Novel Prize’. In particular, at the first day when the announcement of winners was made this year, a keen attention was paid to professor Yamanaka Shinya from Kyoto University, Japan who was one of the co-recipient of the Novel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This year’s achievements including physiology or medicine, physics, and chemistry were made after two years since a novel laureate in chemistry in 2010. Therefore, a total number of the novel laureates from Japan became 16 especially in the category of science. On the other hand, there was no name of Korean scientists on the list of novel laureates this year.

Right after the announcement of all the novel winners in science was made on 11th October, 2011, leaders in science and technology areas from Korea and the US gathered together. President of GIST, Kim, Young-Joon, President of Institute for Basic Science, Oh, Se-Jung, and President of Caltech, Jean-Lou Chameau who was visiting GIST due to conclusion of a MOU had a conversation about diverse topics mostly based on this year’s Novel Award in Science, including potential of Caltech producing as many as 31 novel winners or more through 32 times, and the future of Korean science area.

Lee, Young-Hwan, a science journalist for Chosun Ilbo presided over the conversations for 1 hour and 30 minutes in the office of the President of GIST.
