GIST College to Select 170 Freshmen This Year

         - 60 more from last year’s 110 through rolling admission

         -  ‘Equal opportunity screening’ introduced as part of rolling admission for the underprivileged

□ The GIST College, an undergraduate program offered by the Gwangu Institute of Science and Technology (GISTPresident, Young Joon Kim) announced on 16th its final admission plan for 2014. The latest plan includes increasing the number of admissions, introducing the equal opportunity screening as part of rolling admission and changing the requirement for regular admission with regards to the national scholastic ability test.

 (1) Increasing the number of admissions: 110 170 (150 for rolling admission, 20 for regular admission)

The GIST College decided to expand the number of admissions for this year to 170, a 60 more than the existing 110. The added admissions will be selected all through rolling admission (150) and the number of regular admissions will stay at 20, the same as last year.

The GIST College began admitting students from 2010 and the number of freshmen from 2010 to 2012 amounted to 100. In 2013, the number increased to 110.

 (2) Introducing the equal opportunity screening as part of rolling admission

The GIST College will introduce the ‘Equal Opportunity Screening’ as part of its special rolling admission in an attempt to expand education opportunities and consideration for the underprivileged.

Through the special screening process, GIST will provide an opportunity for anyone who is interested and gifted in science to pursue an undergraduate study in natural science or engineering, regardless of their home environment and financial conditions.

Beneficiaries of the National Basic Livelihood Protection, students from low income families and those living in farming and fishing villages are entitled to the equal opportunity screening. A total number of admissions are ten which will be all selected through rolling admission.

(3) Changing the requirement for regular admission with regards to the national scholastic ability test

  ① National scholastic ability test

In line with this year’s new system which allows a student to choose either Type A or Type B on the national scholastic ability test, the GIST College has designated its format for regular admission as ‘Korean Type A Mathematics Type B • English Type B’. In other words, students must select Korean Type A Mathematics Type B • English Type B in order to apply for the GIST College.

② Science: two different subjects, each within level 2

As for the science subject, requirement was eased to allow more students to apply. Out of 8 science-related subjects(Physics I, II, Chemistry I, II, Life Science I, II, Earth Science I, II), applicants should take two different tests and receive grades that are higher than level 2 for each (Previously, it was three subjects with at least one of them at level 1).

□ The GIST College will receive applications for rolling admission from September 4th to 11th, 2013 and documents until September 13th. Application screening and interview will be held during October and the results will be announced in November. The regular admission will begin after the national scholastic ability test, from December to mid-January.

GIST freshmen will enter School of General Studies (undecided major) and seek their major tracks during the first and second year while learning basic science, humanities and social science. They will select their major tracks in the third year.

Currently, four major tracks are available: Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, with more to come in the future. (For more information on admission, contact ☎062-715-2952~2956)
