“All courses at GIST meet global standards and are conducted in English, and to the extent possible, we offer customized education to all students so that no-one is left behind.”

These were the words of GIST President Jung-Ho Sonu in an interview with the Harbin Daily while participating in the International Presidents Forum held on (May) 6 at Harbin Institute of Technology, China.

In an interview on the theme “The Secret of Studying Abroad by Presidents of the World’s Famous Universities”, Russia’s University of Moscow, Japan’s Waseda University, a coalition of eight universities from Australia, and U.S. University of California, Berkeley took part. GIST was the only participant from Korea.

Amidst intense efforts to attract global talents, GIST President Sonu is actively moving to acquire the top students of the worlds most famous universities.

President Sonu participated in the International Presidents Forum, attended by more than 240 representatives of foreign universities in 75 countries, and met with President Wang Shuguo of Harbin Institute of Technology to sign a mutual agreement for various levels of student exchange, including a double diploma system between the two schools. One of China’s universities in six fields of concentration, Harbin Institute of Technology is regarded as one of the country’s finest science and technology colleges.

GIST President Sonu commented that, “As a research-focused university, it is imperative GIST acquires core talents that can exhibit excellent research capabilities”, and that “GIST will actively respond to the intense competition to attract global talents by strengthening the Intern Program and overseas PR of the school”.

The most talented students recommended through a strict evaluation process in their respective countries participate in the GIST Global Intern Program. At GIST, they work under a professor of their relevant majors, and receive full financial support for their stay in Korea while they carry out various research activities.

In particular, the academic credits they acquire by attending lectures at GIST will also be acknowledged in their own schools back home. This makes it popular among students. A significant number of students that took part in the Intern Program come back to register as full-time students at GIST and become the school’s core talents. Currently, many competent students from not only Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), but also University of Philippine, University Malaysia Sabah and Babes-Bolyai University are studying at GIST.
