California Institute of Technology ( hereinafter Caltech), one of the prestigious university in science and engineering and known for focused education on limited number and intensive investment in basic science, moves forward in full swing for cooperation with GIST, which gains attention as Korean Caltech.

GIST said that Gary Lorden(68) emeritus and chairman of GIST-Caltech cooperation committee visited GIST on March 23. Especially, further discussion for cooperation between the two institutes is expected to gain momentum as this visit is an official one of Caltech for deepening relationship.

Professor Lorden had a meeting with key figures of GIST and had a detailed discussion over how to enhance the relationship. In particular, GIST is known to pursue exchanges of students by using a program named SURF ( Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship), lecture by Caltech faculties at GIST, building basic science laboratories and curriculum consultation and finally creating joint research programs.

Lee Kwan-Heng, dean of GIST said, “This visit shows that Caltech acknowledges GIST not as a simple single institute for exchanges but as a core key partner for deep cooperation.” He hoped that GIST will continue to have discussion with Caltech and generate concrete and tangible results.

Meanwhile, professor Lorden had a time to meet undergraduates of GIST on March 24. In this meeting, the professor not only introduced Caltech’s education system but also his own life as a mathematician with experience of consultant to Numbers, a well-known drama of CBS.

GIST, which had its first undergraduates of 100 on early March, has gained lots of attention by adopting Caltech-style system to its undergraduate course and benchmarking Caltech curriculum. Undergraduate course of GIST focuses on intensive education on basic science and catechetical lecture for the limited students. In particular, GIST is fully committed to basic education such as humanities, social science and art in order to nurture creative top manpower in science with integrated way of thinking.
