GIST Global Desalination Research Center hosts 10th International Desalination Workshop
□ The Global Desalination Research Center (Director In S. Kim) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) hosted the 10th International Desalination Workshoo (IDW) on November 22 to 25, 2017.
∘ About 200 people from 25 countries attended the event, which was co-hosted by Korea Desalination Plant Association, Busan Metropolitan Waterworks Division, GMVP Research Center, FOHC Research Center, seaHERO2 Research Group, and KORAE Research Group.
□ IDW2017 will be holding two special sessions including Busan Water Authority Special Session and KDPA-APDA Joint Forum for the 10th anniversary with this event.
∘ Major participants included Secretary General of the European Society for Desalination Miriam Balaban, Ahmad Al-Amoudi, vice chairman of the Saudi Arabian Seawater Desalination Service (SWCC) and director of the Desalination Technologies Research Institute (DTRI), Professor Rohit Karnik of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Hassan Arafat of the UAE Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Professor Hideto Matsuyama of Kobe University in Japan, Busan Metropolitan City Waterworks Division Director Jong-cheol Kim, and Korea Transportation Technology Promotion Agency Director Byung-soo Kim.
□ The International Desalination Workshop discussed the world's current status and prospects of desalination, new materials and nanotechnology, membrane pollution and abatement, membrane distillation, net osmosis, and low-energy desalination technology. A total of 112 studies, including 60 oral presentations and 52 poster presentations, were given.
□ At the opening ceremony Secretary General Miriam Balavan was presented with a plaque in recognition of his contribution and support for IDW and the international desalination community.
□ In addition, presentation of the 'SeaHERO Award' was given to five outstanding papers after the rigorous examination by the Award Committee: ▲ Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (Sungkyunkwan University, Seung-ju Lim) ▲ Chief of the National Institute of Transportation Technology (UTS Sydney University, Federico Volpin ▲ President, Korea Desalination Plant (Pukyong National University, Jong Min Jeon) ▲ Korea Environmental Engineering Award (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Nguyen Thanh Tin) ▲ President of K-Water Award (KAIST, Ju-sung Park).
