GIST International Environmental Research Institute held a seminar on adapting to climate change at COP23

□ The International Environmental Research Institute (Director Joon Ha Kim) held a seminar on " Developing adaptive technologies for climate change and developing international cooperation in developing countries" at the 23rd UNFCCC COP23 (COP23) on November 10, 2017, in Bonn, Germany.

□ COP23 Korea Public Relations Center, a subsidiary event of the Conference of the Parties, which is being hosted by the Ministry of Environment, has 40 organizations including government ministries, domestic industry, research institutes, and civil society organizations participating with the international community to share experiences of countering climate change in Korea. Seminars and debates will be held with invited experts to inform the international community on major developments in coping with climate change, such as policies, technologies, industries, and international cooperation.

∘ During this event, the climate adaptation seminar organized by the International Environment Research Institute was attended by about 100 people from government, industry, developing countries, and international organizations interested in climate change adaptation technology and international cooperation. Mozaharul Alam, Coordinator of Climate Change at the United Nations Environment Program's Regional Office Asia Pacific (UNEP-ROAP), and Dr. Zitouni Ould-Dada of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) discussed potential for further cooperation and ways to promote it. GIST Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering gave a seminar on the application of water treatment technology to the affected areas due to climate change, and suggested the technology transfer and cooperation for adaptation to climate change.

∘ Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim said, "Through this seminar, we have made great strides in providing more opportunities to introduce climate adaptation technologies to the international community, contributed technical support for developing countries, and provided opportunities for technical cooperation with UNEP. It is time for all of us to be active in climate change for a sustainable planet."

□ At the 23rd United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which was held in Germany from November 6 to 17, 2017, and presided over by Fiji as the chair of UNFCCC, was attended by over 20,000 people, including representatives of 197 member states, international organizations, and the media. The conference prepared guidelines for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Korea's delegation was headed by the Minister of Environment Eun-kyung and was composed of government officials and experts.

* The United Nations Conference on the Parties (COP), the highest decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), calls on state parties to regularly review the implementation of the Convention and make institutional and administrative decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention.

□ Director Joon Ha Kim said, " Climate change and global warming are now a problem for every city and country in the world. They must do everything they can to fulfill the Paris Agreement and actively deal with climate change in cooperation with the international community."
