GIST signs MoU with KIST Europe and the Germany Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DFKI)

□ GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon visited Europe from August 28 to September 1, 2017, and signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) for mutual research cooperation with Korean Institute of Science and Technology Europe (KIST European Institute), the Germany Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DFKI), and the World Technology Universities Network (WTUN)*.

* KIST European Institute was established in 1996 in Germany as the only overseas government-funded research institute to promote the globalization of scientific technology and international joint research. Through 20 years of R&D and international cooperation activities, it has established various cooperation networks with leading industry-academic and research institutes in Europe. In particular, it has supported domestic technological and strategic responses for REACH environmental trade barriers. Its aim is to support strategic response and to gain access to the top-level research institutes in the EU.

* DFKI was founded in 1988 as a public-private joint research institute specializing in the development and research of innovative commercial software technology utilizing artificial intelligence. It is a research institute that develops 'artificial intelligence' technology that can be applied to robots and computers through software technology research. Its main research areas are pattern recognition, knowledge management, intelligent visualization, simulation, multi-agent systems. It is the leading AI research institute in Germany and conducts research in all related fields, such as robotics.

* WTUN is a university alliance that promotes understanding of the roles and characteristics of science and technology oriented universities, promotes networking between industries, NGOs, and companies among technology-oriented universities, and promotes research and resource collaboration between universities to solve global problems.

□ On August 28, President Moon visited the KIST Europe Research Center and met with Korea's Chief Superintendent of KIST, and they discussed various topics in detail, such as high-level personnel exchanges, the educational methods of both organizations, and the establishment of a local jointly-operated laboratory.

□ On August 29, the next day, President Moon visited the Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI) to listen to the current status of the institute and to discuss research cooperation.

□ On August 30 and 31, President Moon attended the World Technology Universities Congress (WTUC), which is an annual conference organized by the World Technology Universities Network (WTUN) at Bradford University in England. President Moon gave the keynote address entitled "Glocalization of a Research Oriented University."

□ President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "Through this visit to Europe, we will seek research cooperation and mutual prosperity with our institutions and look forward to having active exchanges and cooperation in science and technology between Germany and Korea."
