Professor Hyoseop Woo's book Ecological Engineering: Principles and Applications has been selected as a 2017 Sejong Excellent Academic Book

Professor Hyoseop Woo of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) has written a book entitled Ecological Engineering: Principles and Applications that has been selected as a 2017 Sejong Excellent Academic Book.

This is the first book of its kind published in Korean about ecological engineering, and it carefully examines ecological engineering examples from the US, Europe, and Japan to benefit ecological scientists, civil engineers, environmental engineers, and landscape architects.

Ecological engineering is a concerned with technological developments to restore ecosystems that have been damaged by human influence in order to improve their long-term sustainability. This will be a useful for SDG's pursuing economic and social sustainability as well as ecological sustainability. Applied ecology engineering is an extension of ecological engineering in that it incorporates engineering methodology and is applied specifically to landscape and construction field.

This book discusses basic ecological theory necessary for ecological engineering as well as the engineering skills required for applied ecological engineering. The first part deals with the functions of ecosystems, basic theories of ecological engineering, ecological engineering modeling, and the resilience of ecological systems. The second part deals with the application of ecological technologies to the natural environment of water, soil, and landscape ecology. The third part covers the application of ecological techniques for the sustainability of rivers, roads, and cities.

The Korea Publishing Promotion Agency has reviewed a total of 4,013 scientific books first published in Korea from March 1, 2016, to February 28, 2017, and has selected 320 of them to be distributed to 1,100 libraries nationwide.
