A multimedia mosaic of moments at GIST
Advanced Photonics Research Institute(APRI) at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST) invites applications for several regular research scientist positions. The APRI at the Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST) was founded in 2001 as a government-funded research institute specialized in the field of photonics and optical technology. With the aim of contributing both to the academic and industrial development in photonics and optics, the APRI has been providing excellent educational programs and a vibrant research and development (R & D) environment. We would like to invite you to join us on a journey into our great future.

1. Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology
The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1993 by the Korean government as a research oriented graduate school to produce highly qualified scientists and engineers and to foster scientific and technological achievements.
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), GIST is the second of its kind, following the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), concentrating on the areas of science and technology. All students at KAIST & GIST are exempt from tuition and fees and receive monthly stipends from MOST. In addition, compulsory military service is waived for Korean Ph.D. candidates. GIST offers all lectures in English and invites international students as well as prominent international professors. Ten percent (10%) of the total student population is international students. The Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development supervises all other universities in Korea besides GIST and KAIST.
GIST is proud of the following records:
Nation"s highest number of Papers published in SCI journals: 5.3/year per professor during the recent 5 consecutive years.
2. GIST History
The preparatory committee for founding the Institute was formed in October 1991 based on the feasibility study conducted between 1989 and 1991. On August 5th, 1993, the legislature approved the law for establishing GIST, and the enforcement ordinance was made on September 6, 1993. On October 11th of the same year, the construction of the campus begun at the institute site located at the Advanced Science and Technology Park. Dr. Doo Bong Ha was inaugurated as the first president of the Institute. The first meeting of the board of trustees was held on December 16, 1993.
On March 9, 1995, the Institute had the opening ceremony with President of the Republic of Korea, Kim Young-Samand 113 new M.S. students admitted from various undergraduate universities around the nation. Top students throughout the country were encouraged to apply for admission. On February 27, 1997, the first 92 master"s degrees were awarded and in the spring of the same year, Ph.D. programs began with 69 new students.
