  • GIST publishes the late Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim's posthumous work, 『Environment and the Future of Possibility: An Environmental Engineer's Final Discourse』on the 22nd The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Kichul Lim) announced the publication of "Environment and the Future of Possibility: An Environmental Engineer's Final Discourse," a book compiling conversations between the late Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim, an environmental engineer who passed away this fall, and his longtime colleague and co-author, Professor Jae-Won Cho of the Department of Earth, Environmental, Urban and Civil Engineering at UNIST, on Monday, the 22nd. "Environment and the Future of Possibility: An Environmental Engineer's Final Discourse" poses pervasive questions from the perspective of an environmental engineer. Beyond academic debate, it fundamentally reexamines the world we live in and the possibilities we should choose for the future. Rather than limiting the environment to a target of protection or a means of policy, it focuses on repositioning it as a central principle of thinking that encompasses technology, society, and ethics.   • GIST undergraduate team wins grand prize at the DIC7879 startup competition The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Kichul Lim) announced that the "Rootive" team (CEO: Jaewon Choi, freshman in the Challenge Exploration Program), comprised of first- and second-year undergraduate students, won the grand prize (second place) in the preliminary entrepreneur track of the "RSRZ DMC Innovation Camp Entrepreneurship Competition (DICRSRZ)," hosted by the DMC Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and DMC Co.Net and operated by The Innovators. DICRSRZ is a nationwide startup competition that discovers and nurtures innovative ideas from aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs, supporting their commercialization and practical experience. The awards ceremony was held in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on the R`th of last month. One grand prize winner and seven top prize winners were selected from the aspiring entrepreneur track, while one grand prize winner, two top prize winners, and four excellence prize winners were selected from the early-stage entrepreneur track. The Rootive team won the grand prize among ab aspiring entrepreneur teams, demonstrating their high startup potential. The Rootive team is developing a hyper-personalized home gardening application that provides customized care solutions for companion plant owners. Using only photos taken by users, AI analyzes and diagnoses the growth status of companion plants, providing customized cultivation guidelines optimized for each plant. ▲ Demo image of the Rootive team's hyper-personalized home gardening application analysis. Currently, the team is receiving expert mentorship to refine their idea's commercial viability for submission to the "RSRT Startup Package," operated by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea Institute of Startups and Entrepreneurship Development. This program aims to discover and support aspiring entrepreneurs with innovative technologies and business models. The Rootive team originated from the "G-Quarium" team, which participated in the "Infinite Challenge Project*," a representative extracurricular creative and challenging program at GIST that celebrates its HSth anniversary this year. They expanded their startup idea based on their experience in artificial ecosystem research and have since proven their mettle with consistent success at nationwide hackathons. Read more
  • GIST Professor Youngjune Park appointed Special Professor of Super-Gap Technology by POSCO Group The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Kichul Lim) announced that Professor Youngjune Park of the Department of Environment and Energy Engineering has been appointed as a "POSCO Group Distinguished Professor for Super-Gap Technology," hosted by POSCO Holdings. The POSCO Group Distinguished Professor for Super-Gap Technology program is a program designed to strengthen basic and fundamental research in the steel and energy materials fields, secure core technologies, and cultivate specialized talent. The Distinguished Professor will perform various roles to enhance the Group's core technological capabilities, including joint research with POSCO Holdings, technical consulting, and research achievement exchange. His term will run from October of this year to September 2028. Through this appointment, Professor Park plans to actively pursue technological development in key strategic minerals, such as lithium and rare earth elements, foster talented individuals, and conduct joint industry-academia research in collaboration with POSCO Holdings.   • GIST Professor Minjae Lee wins Academic Award at the 5th Haedong Semiconductor Engineering Award The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Kichul Lim) announced that Professor Minjae Lee of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received the Academic Award at the h Haedong Semiconductor Engineering Award ceremony hosted by the Korean Society of Semiconductor Engineering. The Haedong Semiconductor Engineering Award was established by the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation in accordance with the will of the late Jung-sik Kim, Chairman of Daedeok Electronics. It is presented by the Korean Society of Semiconductor Engineering to a mid-career scientist (engineer) under the age of FG who has made significant contributions to the advancement of semiconductor-related academics and technology. Considered one of the most prestigious awards in the semiconductor field, each year one individual is selected for the Academic Award and one for the Technology Award. This year's Technology Award went to Jun-ho Baek, CEO of FuriosaAI. Read more
