Abstract
Fiber
optic distributed sensors usually use conventional telecommunication optical
fibers for sensing part. These sensors can measure strain, temperature,
vibration and acoustics in distributed manner, such as the sensing fiber can be
operated as many continuously connected multiple sensors through the fiber. So,
these sensors are perfect to apply for structural health monitoring because
these sensors can measure many continuous points on large structures, also have
durability and electro-magnetic immunity. Therefore, in this presentation,
three types of fiber optic distributed sensors are to be introduced and their
application. At first, Raman OTDR is shown with auto-correction technic due to
bending loss when temperature is the measurement parameter. Secondly, in order
to measure strain, Brillouin OTDA sensor is developed and the spatial
resolution can be enhanced by pulse differential technic. Finally, a phase
modulated fiber optic BOCDA sensor is implemented using pseudo-random phase
modulation. This sensor can detect impact damage severity and location of
composite materials. Anyway, fiber optic distributed sensors are very excellent
to apply for health monitoring of large structures.
