GIST Professor Yo-Sung Ho receives Science Day award from Prime Minister Kyo-ahn Hwang

Science Day award given to Professor Yo-Sung Ho for his important contributions to ICT in Korea

□ Professor Yo-Sung Ho of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) has received a Science Day award from Prime Minister Kyo-ahn Hwang in commemoration of the 50th Science Day on April 21, 2017.

□ Professor Boreom Lee of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Kihong Park of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering, Section Chief Hyo Jung Kim of the School of Mechanical Engineering, and Section Chief Yun Kyung Park of the Department of Physics and Photon Science were also awarded commendations from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for their contributions to science and technology.

□ Professor Yo-Sung Ho received the prestigious Science Day award from Prime Minister Kyo-ahn Hwang for his research and educational initiative regarding digital TV and 3D video services. Professor Ho was recognized for his contributions to the development of the ICT by training researchers, by standardizing video technology through MPEG ISO/IEC, and by writing numerous books.

∘ As a founding member of GISTin 1995, Professor Yo-Sung Ho has been at GIST for over 21 years where he has been involved in the research and educational initiative regarding digital TV and 3D video services. He established a realistic broadcasting research center in 2003 and participated in the MPEG International Standardization Conference as a representative of Korea, thereby making important contributions to science and technology in Korea.


∘ Professor Ho has produced 22 Ph.D. graduates and 64 masters graduates from his lab and has published more than 1,000 papers. For his efforts, he has received the GIST Educational Award in 2003 and 2009, the Hae Dong Academic Award in 2006, the SP Paper Award in 2011, and the SK Telecom Award for 2012. His scholarly contributions have had an important impact on research in his field.


∘ In recognition of his contributions to the development of multimedia signal processing and image compression, Professor Ho was selected as an IEEE Fellow, which is the highest member status in IEEE member and is held by only 0.1% of all members. He has represented Korea at international conferences and serves as chairman of Korea Broadcasting Media Engineering Society.

□ Professor Boreom Lee of the Department of Biomedical Science & Engineering received an award from the Ministry of Science, ICT Future Planning in recognition for his outstanding achievements in the field of neurology and for his research collaborations with industry. The development of artificial intelligence medical technology has been attracting attention as a leading activity in the 4th industrial revolution.

□ Professor Kihong Park of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering has been leading the development of ultra-fine dust science and technology in Korea to minimize its socio-economic damage and to contribute to the protection of the national health. He was recognized by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for his contribution to the advancement of Korea's science and technology by spreading environmental technology through the UN University to developing countries.

□ Section Chief Hyo Jung Kim of the School of Mechanical Engineering was recognized by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for her 19 years of outstanding service to GIST over which time she has contributed to strengthening scientific research by assisting students, faculty, and researchers. As a senior administrative officer at GIST, Ms. Kim has always performed her duties with a positive attitude that promotes better relationships among her team members.
 
□ Section Chief Hyo Jung Kim of the Department of Physics and Photon Science was recognized by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for her contribution to fostering scientific and technological talents and strengthening research capacity by improving the financial affairs and welfare system of GIST and by helping to select the best students.

□ Every year the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning celebrates Science Day on April 21 to honor those who have contributed to the development of science and technology in Korea. The 50th Annual Science Day awards ceremony will be held on April 21, 2017.
