Professor Kiseon Kim's automatic identification monitoring system for fisheries has been selected as an R&D project by the Korean government

□ The Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Korea Ocean Research & Development Agency has selected the automatic identification monitoring system developed by the Korea-Russia MT-IT Convergence Technology Research Center (Professor Kiseon Kim) for further development and study.

∘ This project will develop electronic tag management technology by utilizing a total of 17.5 billion won including a national investment of 15 billion won for a total of 6 years from 2017 to 2023, and researchers will carry out demonstrations on the west coast of Jeollanam-do.

□ Project goals include protecting fishermen from maritime accidents and preventing damage to marine ecosystems caused by the loss or misplacement of fishing related gear, such as nets and ropes. This project will be put into practical use through verification and demonstration of actual sea area for two years after development of localization related technology of marine monitoring and development of system integration technology.

∘ Degradation of the marine ecosystem due to loss or dislocation is estimated to be 378.7 billion won (about 10% of annual catch), and maritime accidents caused by abandoned fishing gear account for approximately 93% of all identified accidents.

□ In addition, the researchers have developed and demonstrated four major technologies (Sea IoT wireless communication-based identification of fisheries, development of fishery identification system, development of fishery management technology, and verification of fisheries identification and control system), developed management policies for each target fishery, and developed policies for increasing the utilization of new technologies.

□ A total of 18 universities, companies, and institutions will participate jointly in the research and development consortium with the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology. In particular, for the systematic promotion and efficient application of this project, the Ministry will be actively engaged with various network and associations in and around Mokpo and Jeollanam-do.

□ This project will contribute to the sustainable development of marine fisheries and industries by applying 5G-based technology and future mobile communication technology, such as LTE NB-IoT to fisheries management. Korea's IoT, which has world-class competitiveness, is expected to promote information and communication convergence technology to the international marine and fisheries related markets.
