In response to recent developments regarding climate change, the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) under the leadership of President Seung Hyeon Moon has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gwangju Jeonnam Research Center and the International Environmental Climate Center on August 18, 2016.
The intent of the MoU is to help educate the local community about climate change and to help fashion sensible climate change policies that strike an equitable balance between safeguarding the community without hampering regional economic growth. Besides the three organizations that signed the MoU, the ceremony was also attended by ten other interested parties, showing the significance of this agreement to regional stakeholders affected by the issue of global climate change.
GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "Climate change is a critical national and global issue whose severity and negative impact on the environment has been increasing dramatically over the years, and this agreement will help secure Gwangju"s and Jeonnam"s position as being at the forefront in developing prudent climate change policies that will help protect Korea"s future."
Through the MoU, a collaborative regional network is created that will allow greater interaction and dialogue between the local community, experts, businesses, and politicians to create an educational outreach program as well as to establish a forum wherein debates and discussions regarding the impact of climate change on various stakeholders can be held for the purposes of fashioning and implementing better climate change policies.
GIST International Environmental Institute Director Joon Ha Kim said, "Since the ratification of the 2015 Paris Agreement, the need for technological developments and breakthroughs has become more apparent if we are to stave off the negative consequences of climate change, and GIST is taking a very pragmatic and necessary step in supporting the Paris Agreement through this MoU that was signed by President Moon."
