GIST"s Name Day celebration will be held on May 27, 2016, at KIA Champions Field for the baseball game between the KIA Tigers and the NC Dinos.

About 1,100 people from Gwangju City Hall, Buk-gu District Office, Gwangju National Science Museum, GIST members, and the GIST Association of Supporters will all be cheering for the KIA Tigers.

The ceremonial opening pitch for the game  will be thrown by second grade student Byung-il Na from San Wol Elementary school, and the first batter will be Dr.  Gi-hak Kwon of GIST.

The two first met at the local children’s learning center. Dr. Kwon had been volunteering at the CheomDan children’s center since 2013 while he was a graduate student, and there he noticed a little boy who was always following his sister. Dr. Kwon later learned that Byung-il had an old prosthetic arm, and he wanted to donate his transportation subsidies to buy a new prosthetic arm for the by. He said, “When I heard that Byung-il felt very uncomfortable with his old prosthetic arm because he had outgrown it, I wanted to help.”

Currently, a prosthetic company from DaeJeon is making a new arm for Byung-il.

GIST recognized Dr. Kwon’s generosity and selected them for the special GIST Name Day event.

Byung-il loves baseball, but, because of his left arm, he cannot play on the field. GIST also invited all eight of Byung-il’s family to the stadium for the baseball game.

Meanwhile, during the intermission at the end of the 5th inning, the GIST College dance team known as ‘Mak-moo-ga-nae’ performed a dance show. Also, high-quality face mask maker BioFDNC (CEO Dae-hyun Jung-GIST alumni) and a toothpaste maker EcoWorld (CEO Seok-chung Oh) was there at the stadium giving away prizes.
