GIST Culture Technology (CT) gives new life
to 2,000 year old shoes from the Mahan era as 3D holograms
The Korean Culture Technology Institute at GIST and the Naju National Museum use cultural technology derived from Professor Kwan Heng Lee"s lab to recreate 2,000 year old shoes from the Mahan era as 3D holograms

The Korean Culture Technology Institute at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) under the leadership of President Seung Hyeon Moon will use cultural technology to revive ancient Jeollanam-do relics from the Mahan era as 3D holograms at an exhibition hosted from March 15, 2016, to March 20, 2016, by the Naju National Museum where people can immerse themselves in the ancient world through a unique holographic experience. The exhibition will feature artifacts excavated from 2,000 year old burial mounds from the Jeonnam Naju.

The technology for the exhibition was derived from Professor Kwan Heng Lee"s Intelligent Design and Graphics Lab at GIST"s School of Mechatronics with funding from the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. The research project involved creating a new process to accurately measure various materials to obtain accurate 3D data and then to replicate and transform that data into a high-quality 3D hologram.
Director Sunbo Park of the Korean Culture Technology Institute said, "The exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to learn about the Mahan era"s history and culture through an immersive holographic experience that is designed to stimulate the imagination while at the same time learning more about Korea"s priceless cultural heritage."
