The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) will hold an informational meeting regarding the 20th Annual Korea Crystal Contest on March 26, 2016, at 1:20 pm in Oryong Hall (Dasan Room). Seoul National University will hold their informational meeting on April 2, 2016, and Pusan National University will hold their informational meeting on April 9, 2016. The competition is open to elementary, middle, and high school students as well as the general public.

Crystals have an atomic lattice structure, and they occur everywhere in nature from salt to snow. Growing crystals is quite easy and begins with a process called nucleation that usually requires a seed to start the process, but growing large and structurally perfect crystals is much more challenging. You can watch a video about the growth of crystals here: http://crystalcontest.or.kr/contents/sub2_3.asp

Since 1997, Pusan National University has sponsored the Korea Crystal Contest to expose people, especially youngsters, to the marvels and beauty of science by having them experience science by growing a crystal for 10 months. From last year, the Korea Crystal Contest has been jointly sponsored by the School of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST, the School of Nano-Science and Technology at Pusan National University, and the Physics and Astronomy Department of Seoul National University.

Participants can create teams consisting of 1 to 3 people, and they can register onsite during the informational meetings hosted at the participating universities. They can also register online at: http://crystalcontest.or.kr or by calling 055-350-5860. The initial registration period for the Korea Crystal Contest begins on April 1, 2015, and will end on April 25, 2016, and late registration will continue until May 31, 2016.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive 1 million won in scholarship, and the Korea Crystal Contest will award a total of 10 million won in scholarship prizes. The prize winners will also have a chance to the Pusan National University Nano-Science Camp, and they will also have a chance to visit/study in China, Japan, or the United States.

Pusan National University Professor Saeyong Jang said, "Even though the Korea Crystal Contest cannot give students a boost in their college admissions process, thousands of students every year become interested in atomic structures and crystal. So the Korea Crystal Contest becomes a very meaningful event that enriches the lives of participants as well as the future of Korea."
