Korea’s first portable laser vibrometer developed
A venture company at GIST, EM4SYS Co.,Ltd., has succeeded in developing Korea’s first portable laser vibrometer. Until now, Korea has relied on imported vibrometers.
EM4SYS Co., Ltd. was founded in 2000 by a prof. Kyi-Hwan Park and a few of his graduate students from the Dynamics and Control Lab. where they focused on developing various optical sensor devices and producing nano measuring instruments, such as an atomic force microscope and laser optical instruments.
The laser vibrometer measures the displacement, velocity, amplitude, frequency, and damping ratios in industrial applications, such as electrical motors, chassis and bodies in automobiles, home appliances, electro-mechanics of airplanes, and various moving electrical parts.
The previous widely used instrument was a contact type vibration sensor, which was inconvenient because of problems with its attachment to the measuring devices and the connection of power cables. Moreover, they were unsuitable for use with high heat generating devices and inappropriate and risky to use inside reactors and machinery with electric insulators.
In addition, existing vibrometers are too large for many outdoor applications. However, by minimizing the size of optics, circuitries, and batteries, EM4SYS was able to optimize the vibrometer for outdoor usage. They developed a portable ‘Vixcel-lite’ that is capable of running 2 to 3 hours with built-in batteries.
Vixcel-lite with the noncontact vibration sensor application to the production line provides a real-time quality control which enables fast and easy PASS/FAIL decision of the vibrational parts and systems.
Laser vibrometers on the market are dominated by foreign companies, such as the Polytec GMBH and Opto Matt. Scanning vibrometers used in Korea are expensive imports, and many industries are solely dependent on them. With the development of the new portable vibrometer that retains the capabilities of foreign vibrometers while being 30% cheaper, this will help to improve Korea"s trade imbalance by revitalizing the domestic manufacturing market with a valuable new product that can also be exported to foreign markets.
