Ph.D. candidates Deuk-jo Gong and Jae-pil Shim were
awarded the grand prize at the 2015 GIST Start-Up Idea Competition

Vela, a team of Ph.D. candidate from the School of Information and Communications won the grand prize at the 2015 GIST Start-Up Idea Competition hosted by the Center for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship.
The Vela team won the grand prize with the idea of replacing expensive substrates with a low-cost high-quality gallium nitride (GaN) monocrystalline substrate. Vela will represent GIST in the 2015 Start-Up League of Korea.
The Excellence Award went to Ph.D. candidate Young-ung Seok with a product idea for a real-time geriatrics monitor. GIST undergraduate students Tae-won Yoon and Dong-Hui Go received an encouragement award for a ‘Unio Pad’ that has all-in-one functionality. Ph.D. candidates Soong-ho Park and Jong-hyun Um also received an encouragement award for a ‘Multi-functional bicycle locator.’ ‘Healthy men with light’ by Ph.D. candidate Song-hyun Lee and Evgenii Kim received a special award.
A total of 44 teams have participated in the competition, and a total of five teams were given awards.
Through this competition, students with excellent start-up ideas will have an opportunity to receive grants, mentorship, prototype manufacturing, and help with establishing a company from the ‘GIST Sprint for Start-up’ program.
