Inaugural Ceremony Held on Mar 11
Attended by Over 500 People
New President Vows to Nurture Creative
Talents, Spur Creative Economy
At a ceremony held on March 11 in Oryong
Hall, Dr. Moon Seunghyeon was officially inaugurated as the 7th President of
GIST. The ceremony was attended by over 500 people, including Mayor Yoon Jang
Hyun of Gwangju City, Chairman Yoon-Woo Lee of GIST Board of Trustees, and other
dignitaries.
“Based on the outstanding achievements
made in the past 20 years, GIST is about to embark on a grand
journey to become one of the world’s top engineering universities,” said President
Moon in his inaugural address. “As President, I will do my best to make sure
GIST helps solve the problems facing the region, the nation, and the world and create
new industries and new jobs to contribute to enhancing a creative economy.”
A
graduate of Gwangju Jeil High School and Seoul National University, President
Moon received his Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from
Illinois Institute of Technology in the United States. He joined the faculty of
GIST in 1994 and served as Vice President and as Acting President in 2006 –
2008.
