Program Sends Student Volunteers to Local Children’s Centers
To Teach Underprivileged Children Math, Science, English
“GIST Learning Ground,” a community outreach program where student volunteers go out to teach local underprivileged children, held a ceremony to celebrate its fifth anniversary on Saturday, December 6 in Oryong Hall.
The ceremony was attended by more than 100 children and officers from local children’s centers. In particular, former National Assembly member Yong Sup Lee gave a special talk titled “Good habits change destiny” at the ceremony.
GIST student volunteers have been going out to local children’s centers one or two evenings every week to teach math, science, and English and provide general help and advice. These local centers are non-profit institutions that provide the children of national basic living support recipients, the near-poor class, and other underprivileged families with educational and other social services.
Currently, 44 volunteer student teachers are serving about 180 pupils at 15 local children’s centers recommended by Gwangju City. A total of 402 volunteer student teachers have served on the GIST Learning Ground program so far.
Acting President Kwan H. Lee of GIST said, “GIST Learning Ground reminds the GIST students, who are themselves recipients of national support, of the meaning of service and social responsibility as well as imparting hope to the local children. As the region’s core educational and research institution, we will continue to expand outreach programs to better communicate with the local communities.”
