"Climate change policy development to strengthen community capacity"
□ Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon), Gwangju Jeonnam Research Institute, International Environmental Research Center, Jeonnam Environmental Industry Development Agency have concluded an agreement to strengthen cooperation on climate change research in Gwangju and Jeonnam.
∘ The agreement signing ceremony was held on January 24, 2017, at the Gwangju Metropolitan City Council Meeting Room and was attended by four organizations, including GIST, and more than 20 people, including GIST International Environmental Research Center Director Joon Ha Kim, Gwangju Jeonam Researcher Sungsoo Park, and Chief Yeon-Soon Ahn of the Agency for Promotion.
∘ The agreement resulted from a ceremony that was held in August of last year with the participation of the Jeonnam Environment Industry Development Agency.
□ Following the agreement, GIST held a second round of policy debates for two hours to strengthen the capacity of Gwangju and Jeonnam to cope with climate change.
∘ The debate was held to examine the impact of the Paris Convention on Climate Change and the results of the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) that was held in Marrakech, Morocco.
∘ The theme of "Marrakech COP22 Major Outcomes and Implications" will be presented at a policy debate by the Director of the International Environmental Research Center.
∘ Director Joon Ha Kim (GIST Professor, School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering), Gwangju Jeonnam Research Institute Seung-hee Cho, Research Fellow Byung Chul Oh of the International Climate and Environment Center, Senior Researcher Sungmin Cha of the Jeonnam Environmental Industry Development Institute, Hee-cheol Yoon of the Gwangju Sustainable Development Council, 7 experts including local government officials and scholars such as Chairman Jin-suk Jeon of the Jeonju City Council Welfare Committee and Environmental Protection Manager Hyun-sik Park of Jeollanamdo Province held intensive discussions on local government policy responses regarding changes in international climate policy.
□ Director Joon Ha Kim said, "We are now in the era of the fourth industrial revolution where climate change can cause physical as well as cyber chaos. Therefore, in this new era, we need to work on strengthening our capabilities within Gwangju and Jeonnam."
□ In addition, Director Gyeong-pyeong Im, said, "Gwangju Metropolitan City should play an active role as the local government by creating related ordinances in order to cope with climate change. By fostering a renewable energy industry in response to climate change, we will take the lead in responding to climate change."
□ This policy forum was hosted by the International Climate Environment Center, the GIST International Environmental Research Center, the Gwangju Jeonnam Research Institute, the Jeonnam Environmental Industry Promotion Agency, and the Gwangju Metropolitan City Sustainable Development Council. The next round of policy debates will be held later this year.
