Participants of the National Assembly Forum for the support of the water industry held on November 7, 2016.

Director Joon Ha Kim of the International Environmental Research Center who is also a professor of Earth Science and Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) attended the National Assembly Forum for the support of the water industry in Seoul on November 7, 2016, whose theme centered around the fourth industrial revolution and the impact of climate change.

The forum, initiated by the Minister of Environment, Kyung-kyu Cho, is designed to prepare Korea for the growing demand for water resulting from climate change and to discuss ways to systematically foster domestic water industry and harness new growth.
 
Professor Seung-il Choi of Korea University participated with Professor Yong-jin Yoon who is the vice president of Dohwa Engineering Co., Ltd., and with Professor Kim during the forum on "The Present status and development plan of water industry in Korea."
 
Professor Joo-hwan Yun of the Korea University of Water (Korea Water Industry Consultation) was the chairperson of the forum, and nine experts from the media, academia and industry discussed the situation and problems of the domestic water industry, future prospects, technology development and industrialization trends, and opportunities for global expansion.

Professor Kim said, "It is imperative to nurture the water industry in order to solve water-related issues and to find new growth engines. We need science and technology that encompasses various technologies with regard to water circulation issues in response to climate change and this new era of the fourth industrial revolution. It is necessary to establish a water industry promotion law, which is the starting point of the water industry development and supporting polices, and to establish a specialized research institutes to support it."
 
The forum was hosted by the National Assembly"s Environmental Labor Committee Chairman Young-pyo Hong and members of the National Assembly New Growth Industry Forum, the Korea New Growth Industry Research Institute, the Korean Water and Wastewater Society (currently President of the Society), and the Korea Environment Corporation.
