The History of the World translated and co-published
by Professor Kyung Deok Roh
Professor Kyung Deok Roh, a GIST College faculty member with the Division of Liberal Arts and Science, has translated and co-published The History of the World written by Professor John Morris Roberts of Oxford University. Professor Roberts has been recognized by other scholars as a truly authentic historian following in the footsteps of Arnold Toynbee. The History of the World is a classic syntactic treatise that has been continually revised since it was first published almost 40 years ago in 1976.
This translation of The History of the World has about 1,500 pages and is the first complete Korean translation of the work. Hongik University history professor Mi Mi Lee, Sejong University visiting professor Jae Wook Park, and other historians also participated in the translation. Translators divided the contents into two books. The first book consists of the prehistoric civilization, the classic period, and the Middle Ages. The second book covers the expansion of Europe and the modern era.
Professor Roh said, “A full-scale world history written with a focus on political and economic developments over ebb and flow of the entire history of civilization could not be found in recent years in the domestic publishing industry. General readers as well as academics who want to explore a broad account of world history will find this work stimulating and informative, especially if they are interested in gaining a better understanding of current events affecting the world.”
Professor Roh received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and he specializes in the history of the Cold War, Soviet political history, and in the history of the socialist movement. As a professor in the Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences at GIST College, Dr. Roh"s courses include "The History of Capitalism and Socialism" and "The Formation and Development of Modern Western World."
