Ph.D. candidate Kwang-myung Jeon is the first recipient of the ‘Sunseom Scholarship’
Ph.D. candidate Kwang-myung Jeon (pictured here with GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon) of the School of Information and Communication was chosen as the first recipient of the new ‘Sunseom Scholarship’ from GIST.
The ‘Sunseom Scholarship’ is a new scholarship created with a financial contribution of 100 million KRW made last April by Seok-won Ko (84), a former director of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency in New York. He requested that the scholarships be used for the benefit of bright young GIST students.
Mr. Ko wanted to honor the spirit and heart of his mother for giving her children the best education possible even during very difficult times. He named the scholarship Sunseom in remembrance of his mother’s name: Soon-seom Lee. The scholarship is awarded to a student who always strives to develop creative ideas rather than to a student who only has good grades.
Recently, each department recommended a student for the scholarship. After a careful review by the education and scholarship committee, Kwang-myung Jeon was selected as the first recipient of the Sunseom Scholarship. Kwang-myung Jeon has been entered and won prizes at the New Business ideas competition and Specialized University of Science and Technology Joint New Business competition and has been active member of student entrepreneurship club such as ‘Intelligent Acoustics’.
Kwang-myung Jeon said, “With hopes of national development and of returning my service to society, I will keep Mr. Ko"s sentiments close to my heart. I would like to thank him for his generosity and for sprinkling the seeds of hope in Gwangju. I will further endeavor to become even more resourceful so I can contribute to the national development of science and technology."
