A multimedia mosaic of moments at GIST
GIST held a Graduate Admissions Seminar and Open Lab on July 11 (Fri) for those interested in applying for the Graduate School’s Spring 2015 first round screening. The seminar was held at 11 a.m. in Oryong Hall on GIST campus and covered such topics as a school overview, scholarships and benefits, and notes on application procedure. In addition, graduate students currently attending GIST gave tips on how to prepare for the interview and shared some honest thoughts on campus life. In the afternoon of the same day, all research labs of GIST Graduate School opened their doors to prospective students so that they may get a glimpse of the lab life and environment. GIST selects new students to enter the graduate school in March 2015 in two batches: the first round in July and August and the second round in October and November. In the first round, some 170 new students will be admitted into the Ph.D., M.S., and Integrated M.S.-Ph.D. programs in 8 enrollment units: School of Information and Communications, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Mechatronics, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Life Sciences, Department of Physics and Photon Science, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Medical System Engineering. First round applications are accepted from July 10 (Thu) through July 22 (Tue). To nurture future researchers in science and technology, GIST provides its graduate students with a variety of benefits. GIST graduate students are exempted from payments and support fund fees throughout their enrollment and also receive stipends, meal subsidies, and individual research incentives every month. Students with outstanding entrance marks are awarded a Presidential Scholarship worth KRW 3 million per semester. Double occupancy dormitory rooms are provided to ensure a stable living environment conducive to concentrated study, and male students entering a Ph.D. or Integrated M.S.-Ph.D. program are enlisted as special research personnel, who can complete their military service by just finishing their course of study. Founded 21 years ago, GIST has been strengthening its core competence as a research-oriented university by employing a Select and Focus strategy. As a result, GIST was ranked No. 6 in the world (No. 1 in Asia) in Citations per Faculty by QS World University Rankings 2103. GIST first made this list as No. 15 in 2008 and climbed up to No. 14 in 2009, No. 10 in 2010, No. 12 in 2011, and No. 7 in 2012. Among Asian universities, GIST has retained the No. 1 spot for 6 consecutive years. International students from 23 countries around the world account for about 10% of current students at GIST Graduate School, where a tradition of 100% English lectures has taken a firm root ever since its foundation. Also, GIST Graduate School’s student to faculty ratio stands at 10 to 1, comparable to those of world leading universities such as Caltech and MIT. Earlier in Seoul, smaller-scale admissions seminars were held by GIST Graduate School on July 3 (Thu) in the Shinchon area and on July 4 (Fri) in the Konkuk University area, where consultations were offered by current students to prospective students living in those areas.
