A multimedia mosaic of moments at GIST
Largest-scale International LED conference to take place in Korea for the first time - White LED and solid state lighting conference at Ramada Jeju Hotel, June 1~5 - Lectures by prestigious scholars, Professor James S. Speck (US), Professor Karl Leo (Germany), Managing Director Son Se Hwan (LG Chemicals) - To introduce latest LED, OLED, SSL technologies for next generation high efficiency eco-friendly lighting An international conference on LED*, OLED* and SSL* involving world-renowned experts will take place in Jeju island in June, for the first time in Korea. ○ GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President ž Young Joon Kim) said on May 26th that the 5th International Conference on white LED and solid-state lighting (WLED-5) will take place at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel from June 1~5, and the conference will be attended by prestigious scholars and experts in the fields of LED, OLED and SSL. *LED (Light-Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor device which emits light by releasing electric current and uses the p-n joint structure of semiconductor. Luminescence is created by the integration among electros or electronic holes. *OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is an organic device to emit light, whose emission layers consist of organic compounds. *SSL (Solid-State Lighting) is an illumination which uses luminous elements such as semiconductor-based LED and OLED, rather than filament or plasma. ○ WLED-5 was launched in 2007 for the purpose of checking on the current address of LED, OLED and SSL technologies and contributing the development of related industries. Thus far, the conference has been held four times in Japan, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the US and it will be the first time that the conference will be held by by the Korea Society of Optoelectronics and the Society of LED and Solid State Lighting in Korea. □ Approx. 400 or more experts will take part in the conference, and state-of-the-art LED, OLED and SSL technologies to make next generation, high efficiency green lightings will be introduced to the participants. ○ In the LED sector, a variety of the latest technologies for lighting, display and optical communication will be presented, such as LED technology using nano-structure, white light technology using quantum dot, GaN LED of a 3 dimensional core shell structure. ○ In the OLED sector, new materials and structures to promote the efficiency of white OLED, flexible OLED board technology for next generation displays and technology to manufacture high efficiency flexible OLED based on liquid process will be introduced. ○ In the SSL sector, the latest trend and outlook of research on LED and high efficiency white OLED manufacturing technology using organic/inorganic hybrid nano-structure and convergence technologies to apply them to displays will be discussed. □ During the conference, four world-renowned pundits will give lectures. ① Mr. Tyrone D. Mitchell, Vice President of Cree which is a US-based LED lighting manufacturer leading the global marketplace will speak about white LED used in general lighting. ②Professor James S. Speck of University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the US, who is a world-renowned scholar, will explain the cause of droop* which emerged as a major issue related to GaN-based LED. *Droop refers to the phenomenon that luminous efficiency declines in response to an increase in the density of electric current flowing into LED ③ Professor Karl Leo of Technical University Dresden in Germany will introduce the latest trend of research on the development of high efficiency OLED and a phosphorescent* OLED technology realizing high efficiency of over 100㏐/W, and suggest solutions to problems to be addressed to improve efficiency. ④ Managing Director Son Sw-hwan of LG Chemicals will introduce a OLED panel technology realizing high efficiency of over 80㏐/W on a 10x10㎠ one-pixel panel and explain the latest technologies trend on the development of OLED lighting. *lumen (㏐): unit for the speed of light ○ In addition, the conference program will also include lectures by over 30 experts from home and abroad, research dissertations presentation by participants from over 10 countries (210 papers), the special industrial session to feature core industrial themes of Korean companies and an exhibition. □ Professor Park Seong Ju of School of Materials Science and Engineering in GIST, who is the chairperson of the WLED-5 organization committee said “Optical electronics technologies such as LED, OLED and SSL form considerable markets around the world. The WLED-5 will be a valuable opportunity to share information on next generation optical convergence materials (efficient, eco-friendly and human-friendly) and new technologies, and also the exhibition to take place in parallel with the conference will set the foundation for Korean companies to advance into overseas markets.
*Phosphorescence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is released relatively slowly in the form of light.
