A multimedia mosaic of moments at GIST
International Environment Analysis Education Center of GIST provides education program for environment researchers from Africa and SEA International Environment Analysis Education Center (IEAEC) of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President ž Young Joon Kim) invited 10 environment researchers from Africa and Southeast Asia including Nigeria, Vietnam and Thailand to the 2-week education program on environmental pollutants monitoring from October 7 to 19. During the program, researchers and professors of IEAEC and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at GIST provided lectures and practice courses on the detection and measurement of pollutants in water, air and soil, and continuous monitoring and analysis. Among them were pollutants monitoring courses customized to the local environment and characteristics of Africa and Southeast Asia. This program was conducted as part of the Korea-United Nation Development Program (UNDP) for which IEAEC was chosen as education provider in October last year. IEAEC was founded in 2004 as a research institute specialized in R&D and education program on environmental contamination. Over the past decade, IEAEC has operated the UNU (United Nation University) and GIST Joint Program on Science and Technology for Sustainability, whereby it conducted internship programs for graduate students, government officials, researchers at state-run research institutes and professors of countries near the Mekong River, such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, and also hosted international symposiums. As such, IEAEC has made contributions to addressing environmental problems in developing countries through cultivation of environment experts and upgrade of research capabilities based on the analysis and disposal of pollutants.
