GIST Graduate school Holds Information Session ∙ Open Lab.

2014 Spring Semester
GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President Young Joon
Kim) graduate school will hold campus information session and Open Lab on
July 12th (Fri.) for students who want to apply for the 1st phase admission for
2014 spring semester. Application period for the 1st phase admission for 2014
spring semester will be from July 11th (Thur.) to July 23rd (Tues.).
In the 1st phase admission for the spring semester, GIST graduate school will admit 278 students for masters courses and 173 students for PhD and MS/PhD joint courses across 8 units of School of Information and Communications, School of Material Science and Engineering, School of Mechatronics, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Life Sciences, Department of Physics and Photon Science, Department of Chemistry and Graduate Program of Department of Medical System Engineering.
The campus information session will provide information on overall admission related matters including overview of GIST, scholarship programs and things to remember in applying for admission. It will be followed by the remark of the GIST student where Nam Yoon Kim who is taking MS/PhD joint course at School of Mechatronics after entering GIST as the best scholarship student in 2013 spring semester. After the information session, Open Lab with all research labs of GIST participating will be rolled out for participants to have a peek at the day at inside of GIST lab.
Marking its 20th anniversary of foundation this year, GIST ranked 7th in the world
(1st in Asia) in the category of citations per faculty in 2012 QS World University
Rankings released September 11th last year. After making its debut as 15th
position in the world ranking in 2008, GIST has been recognized for its world class research capabilities with continuous rise of ranking from 14th in 2009, 10th in 2010
and 12th in 2011 and it has been second to none in Asia in the rakings 5 years in
a row. In the latest 2013 QS Asia University Rankings released last June, GIST again topped the list in the category of citation per faculty, being the No. 1 in Asia.
Students admitted to GIST will be exempted from tuition and faculty fee while studying at the institution and provided with certain amount of school expenses, food subsidy and research individual scholarship. For all students in principle, double occupancy dormitory room is opened to let them focus on research and study while they are studying for their degree. Especially, male students who have not finished the military service yet can be exempted from the obligation when entering PhD courses or joint courses being registered as specialized research agents.
The principle of English-only-class that has been implemented since the opening of the institute now fully settled with 10% of students at GIST graduate school come from overseas. The student: faculty ratio is about 8.2:1, being almost equivalent to the world most prestigious science and technology institutes such as Caltech (7.4:1) or MIT (10.9:1).
The information session will be held from 11:00AM ~ 12:30 PM at the 1st floor
of Oryong Hall, at GIST and the website (www.gist.ac.kr) is now open for application for the session and Open Lab.
