GIST Wins the Best Poster Awards at the 13th Joint Symposium on Materials Science and Engineering for the 21st Century

The Joint Symposium on Materials Science and Engineering for the 21st Century is an annual forum for faculties and students studying materials science at top-tier universities in Asia, including the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President   Young Joon Kim) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Korea, Kyoto University and Tohoku University in Japan, National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, to share and discuss their findings and ideas.

Established in 2001 by faculities from three universities, the symposium has been expanded in size and now engages seven universities. In 2003, the management of the symposium was passed on to students with a purpose to make an education-focused forum.

This year’s symposium, which marked the 13th, was held on June 23 to 26 at National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan where 20 teachers and 90 students attended.

Oral and poster presentation sessions were categorized into five subjects: electric magnetic materials; battery materials; nano materials; materials processing; and materials characterization. Among participants from GIST, two students gave oral presentations and four poster presentations, among which three won the Best Poster Awards.

Despite limitations in time, all the participants made active discussions over their research subjects and shared ideas with each other.

The next symposium will be hosted by Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. More active exchanges among students and faculties are expected.
