GIST Enhanced Cooperation with Caltech – From 6 to 8 May, the experts in technology transfer and establishment of new business ventures and in raising funds for development visited GIST to share the strategic visions between the two. □ GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President Young Joon Kim) and Caltech (California Institute of Technology), one of the most prestigious research university in the US, are improving the mutual cooperation in terms of various areas such as exchanging students, conducting joint researches, transferring technologies, establishing new business ventures, and raising funds. ❍ From May 6 to 8, Caltech’s two officers – Frederic Farina, CIO (Chief Innovation Officer) at Executive Director Office of Technology Transfer, and W. Matthew Leroux, Assistant Vice President for Development, Campaigns and Principal Gift Strategy – visited GIST and shared Caltech’s accumulated experience and knowledge about each related area. On May 8, GIST stated that this visit was the beginning of the cooperation and exchange between GIST and Caltech in terms of technology transfer, establishment of new business ventures, and fund raising. ❍ Caltech has received 32 Nobel awards and is now the benchmark for research universities of the world. GIST and Caltech signed an MOU to increase the number of students and professors exchanged between the two and to strengthen mutual cooperation in last October. And GIST and Caltech are fostering cooperation in terms of education and research this year, e.g., conducting a joint research by eight professors (four professors from each) in terms of new materials, biotechnology, and medical treatment. ❍ This visit is a part of follow-up efforts for cooperation and exchange following reciprocal visits by the two Presidents last year. This visit is to expand the scope of cooperation including technology transfer and establishment of new business ventures in order to turn the results of research & development into money-making ventures and raising funds for the development of the university and, consequently, to share the two universities’ development strategies, know-hows, and experience in the mid- and long-term. □ Frederic Farina met representatives from GTI (GIST Technology Institute), explained the foundation of Caltech and the current status of technology transfer, and discussed the method to conduct the exchange and cooperation between the two. □ W. Matthew Leroux met the representatives from Section of Public Relations and Funding at GIST and explained the current funding situation and the strategy and the need to vitalize the funding. He also promised to invite the representatives from GIST at “International Fundraising Congress” held in the US next year with fundraising experts from renowned universities including Caltech, as a sign of closer cooperation in the future.
